About Safeway

The Safeway grocery store chain was established in April 1915 with its headquarters in American Falls, Idaho. S. M. Skaggs, the company’s namesake and namesake, was a Baptist clergyman who opposed “the growing evil of installment purchasing” among merchants. He opened Skaggs, a store where people shopped by grabbing products from shelves and paying at the register. Marion Barton Skaggs (M.B. Skaggs), S.M. Skaggs’s son, made an offer of $1088 (equivalent to $31500 in 2022). His father declined because he wanted to devote more time to his ministry. He expanded his business by opening a second location in Burley, Idaho, three years later. Skaggs continued to expand his company by keeping a number of locations open in both Idaho and Montana. With the help of his five brothers, M.B. Skaggs was able to expand the Skaggs Cash Store and Skaggs United Stores grocery and coffee chain to 428 locations throughout 10 states after purchasing them in 1926. Skaggs also decided the chain that may outlast his own life shouldn’t carry his name, so he incorporated the merger with 322 Sam Seelig Company stores as Safeway Inc., virtually doubling the size of his business. The “safe way” moniker was used to emphasize the fact that customers paid with cash instead of plastic. Additionally, a family wouldn’t get into debt because of a store charge, as many did during the Great Depression. Charles E. Merrill, founder of the Merrill Lynch brokerage firm, had an idea to streamline the West Coast food business later that year. He acquired 322 Safeway stores that were formerly owned by W.R.H. Weldon and offered Skaggs $1.5 million in cash plus 30,000 shares in the merging corporation, which Skaggs accepted. M.B. Skaggs became the company’s CEO after the merger between Skaggs and Safeway. Safeway first went public two years after it was founded. Pricing by the pound, “sell by” dates on perishable foods, nutritional data, and parking lots were all introduced by the grocery chain in the 1930s. Safeway is now the largest supermarket chain located west of the Mississippi River as a result of the merger. The original headquarters of the corporation were in Reno, Nevada; in 1929, they moved to Oakland, and in 1996, they shifted again, this time to Pleasanton. Up to the year 2000, the business had branches in a variety of Canadian, British, Australian, West German, Mexican, Saudi Arabian, and Jordanian cities and states. The growth beyond the West Coast, though, was not fruitful. Safeway considered a sale in 2014, and Albertson’s made a takeover offer of $9.4 billion at the time. On January 30, 2015, the merger between Albertsons and Safeway was finalized, and the Safeway brands were integrated into Albertsons’ operations. Kroger is reportedly trying to acquire Albertsons for $24.6 billion, as stated in a new merger agreement.
